What We Do
Welcome to the Ad-Hoc Department within the Marshall Artificial Intelligence Association (MAIA), where curiosity, creativity, and artificial intelligence come together without the boundaries of a single industry. Unlike MAIA’s industry-specific teams, the Ad-Hoc Department gives members the freedom to explore a new and unexpected topic, tackling challenges that may fall outside our traditional focus areas. Each project provides an opportunity to dive into an emerging field, identify a real-world problem, and develop an innovative AI-powered solution from the ground up. Whether exploring sustainability, transportation, social impact, consumer technology, or an entirely new space, the Ad-Hoc Department challenges members to think beyond conventional applications of AI. Through experimentation and collaboration, we aim to prove that when it comes to AI innovation, no problem or industry is off limits.
Problem Discovery
The Ad-Hoc Department begins by exploring emerging industries, trends, and real-world challenges that fall outside MAIA’s traditional project areas. Our team researches unfamiliar spaces, identifies meaningful problems, and looks for opportunities where artificial intelligence can provide a unique solution. This allows members to continuously venture into new territory and discover unexpected applications for AI.
Creative Exploration
With no predetermined industry or solution, our team has the freedom to think beyond conventional applications of artificial intelligence. Members brainstorm, experiment, and explore different technologies to determine how AI can approach each challenge in a new way. This open-ended environment encourages creativity and gives members the opportunity to pursue ideas that may not fit within MAIA’s other departments.
Solution Development
Once a challenge is identified, the Ad-Hoc Department transforms ideas into working AI-powered solutions. Members collaborate across technical, creative, and strategic roles to design, prototype, and refine projects from the ground up. Each project provides hands-on experience applying AI to an entirely new problem and learning how to build solutions in unfamiliar environments.

The Ad-Hoc Department is built around the idea that innovation should not be limited to a specific industry.
